About Us
I, the founder and owner of Alem Desta Coffee Export, born and raised in a large Ethiopian family where coffee was not only a drink but a tradition and rhythm. In the house where I grew up, at least twice a day, morning and afternoon, without fail, we used to gather for homemade coffee—freshly roasted, carefully brewed, and shared together among family members and guests.
Drinking coffee was the center of daily life in our family. Elders talked; children listened and learned. Guests were never turned away without a cup of coffee. These moments taught me that coffee deserves patience, quality is not rushed, and coffee connects people.
Later, studying at Hawassa University, surrounded by the finest coffee-growing highlands of Sidama, I began to understand coffee beyond culture—as an agricultural commodity, craftsmanship, and livelihood for millions.
After graduation, I moved to the United States (Chicago, East Bay/San Francisco, and DMV area) for nearly a decade. There, I saw how highly Ethiopian coffee is valued globally, which inspired me to return home and join my brother, Tadesse Desta, a coffee exporter with decades of experience.
Through his guidance, I learned how coffee travels from smallholder farms to roasters around the world. Today, I work closely with farmers and suppliers, building a bridge between Ethiopian coffee producers and global buyers while preserving quality, integrity, and heritage.
